There is a simple exercise that you can do to help you consider whether you are living life the way you want to, or whether there are things you may want to adjust.
The following life exercise invites you to look at what you spend most of your time on and consider if there are other things you want to add...or if there are things you want to reduce or remove from your 'to-do' list.
This can also be used to review how your life balance changes over time by repeating the exercise at various points in your life.
What you need:
Time
A suitable space that gives you the headspace to work on the exercise
Paper and Pen
Before you start:
Try to set your mind in a non-judgemental space. It isn't an exercise to find fault with how things are or aren't, but it is an opportunity to consider whether you want to and can make any change of if you would like to make any changes in the future.
When you are ready to begin:
-
Identify categories for the areas of your life that you spend time on.
-
Family
-
Friends
-
Work, business
-
Responsibilities
-
Home life
-
Your physical health, mental health, spirituality
-
Sports, hobbies, recreation, travel
-
Learning and self development
-
Community involvement
-
and many more...
-
-
Draw a wheel or grid similar to those shown above, or you can also make a simple list if you prefer.
-
Think about each category and how much time you spend on it and write it on your wheel or grid. You may like to draw your wheel or grid to show bigger areas and smaller areas depending on how much time it takes or use different colours for different categories.
Take time to review your wheel/ grid or list.
Remember, each of us is different, with different circumstances and mindsets.
Try not to hold any judgement about why things are the way they are for this exercise.
Next, you may choose to consider:
-
Are there any areas that you don't spend time on but that you would like to make a priority?
-
Are there any things you spend to much time on and want to reduce?
-
Are there any changes you would like to make and if so, are they temporary or permanent changes?
Sometimes this exercise can bring revelations that you want to change immediately.
If you do want to make changes, figure out what works best for you that is likely to make the change stick for as long as you need it to.
If you identify big changes that may be difficult to implement immediately, consider options for making a series of small changes rather than delay making one big change.
